Female Players Reign Supreme in Casual Online Games

Online games offer an equal opportunity for women of all ages to get in on the fun – and advertisers are taking notice. In fact, a study by game industry research firm DFC Intelligence reveals that advertisers spent close to $150-million to buy space on casual game sites or in the games themselves in 2006, up from $74-million in 2002.

What’s behind this shift? Advertisers recognize that the audience for casual online games is expanding to encompass all genders and all ages. Research shows that these players spend more time online and consume less traditional media. Companies that ignore this space miss out on a critical opportunity to reach their target audiences while they’re at their most engaged.

Online Games Attract Women of All Ages

Casual online game sites continue to attract an ever-growing audience of female players who can’t get enough mind-bending puzzle and strategy games. While the total female online gaming audience in August 2008 grew 27 percent versus last year to nearly 43 million visitors, the number of female gamers in the 12-24 and 55-64 age segments grew at a substantially faster rate, reports comScore in its 2008 study of online gaming audiences.

This presents a significant opportunity for advertisers, who have primarily looked to the electronic game industry as an arena to reach young males. The increased interest in online gaming among teenage girls and adult women is encouraging marketers to move more of their ad budgets into the free online gaming space. And it’s not just retail brands that are making the move. Many pharmaceutical advertisers now use online game portals as a platform for reaching female consumers.

What’s more, the online games industry is encouraging the trend by developing gaming content, portals and websites that are geared toward the interests of a female audience. This strategy ensures that the popularity of casual online games among women of all ages will continue to skyrocket in the coming years.

A Passion for Casual Online Games

Not only are millions of women playing casual online games, these women are dedicated players. Adult women are almost twice as likely as men to spend 20 hours per week playing PC games, reports the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). In fact, a survey conducted by Slingo, a digital interactive entertainment company and thought-leader in the casual games industry, reveals that nearly half of all visitors to the Slingo.com portal play casual games seven days per week. The majority of respondents admitted to playing several different games in one sitting (71.6%) and to playing a particular game more than five times in a row (61.1%).

What does this mean for advertisers? Casual online game sites are among the stickiest entertainment sites on the Web. By tapping into this highly engaged audience, advertisers can connect with consumers more easily than in other advertising platforms where the message is often tuned out.

There are also a variety of innovative ad formats available in the online games space. In addition to rich-media and conventional banner ads, some casual online game sites offer in-game advertising, contest sponsorships, or branded “advergames”. These formats further enhance advertiser brand engagement, providing a tangible return-on-investment for advertisers in comparison with traditional media buys.

The take away: A quickly growing, diverse female audience is turning to casual online game sites to connect with like minded people, make new friends and have fun. Advertisers and media planners stand to win big by purchasing space in these online game destinations.

Statcraft 2 Tip: Playing Zerg on Battlenet

So you are considering playing Zerg in Starcraft 2? There are certainly a few things you should get to know first, each race has it’s strengths and weaknesses and I’m going to show you what is good and what is not so good about playing Zerg so you can make an educated choice when choosing your race.
Zerg is a very fun race to play because they are designed to be a mass-producing type of race. Unlike Protoss and Terran a Zerg player needs to have a constant stream of units being produced and sent into battle. The Terran and Protoss races are all about making the best units to counter whatever they are fighting. Zerg is like this as well but not to the degree that Terran and Protoss are. We only have a few selections when it comes to units but we are setup to pump out units much faster. Of course this requires more minerals and gas then the other races so a Zerg player must be expand early and often in a game which makes it more complicated and chaotic then with the other races.
Zerg has a weakness defending against an air attack early on in the game so this has caused us problems on battlenet recently but there are things we can do to help with this. We also have weaker air attack units then the other races. Mutalisks are good at scouting but do poorly in battles against good anti air units so we mainly use ground units for the large attacks.
Overall I love playing Zerg but they are hard to learn and you must good at managing the chaos which is just part of playing the Zerg. However, if you get the hang of playing them is very rewarding as there is no better feeling the sending your mass hydralisks and roaches to dominate your opponent!

As the release date nears, and the beta become more wide spread, it is becoming more important to learn each of the player’s weaknesses.

StarCraft 2 Tip: Zerg vs Protoss Tactics that Work!

Playing against a good Zerg player can be difficult against any of the other players. However, with the right units a Protoss player can learn to beat the Zerg down. The key to winning this type of game is know what stragity the Zerg player is using. Scouting becomes the most important think you can do in the beginning of the game. You need to know what units they are going to send at you, so I would recommend getting an observer pretty early on in the game. If he is making a lot of zerglings you need to build a colossus or 2 really fast and they will make short work of the zerglings. You also need to make sure you have a few zealots and stalkers to defend the colossus from attacks. If he is using a lot of roaches and hydralisks then you should build immortals as they do very well against roaches and hydras. If he is dumb enough to try and attack you with mutalisks then just build up a bunch of stalkers and you should have no trouble taking them out. Those 3 are the main attacks that a good Zerg player with use against you. So you see winning this type of game is pretty straightforward.

Of course there is one other major option that a Zerg player can use and that is building infestors. A good Zerg player with infestors can be a big problem for us so keep an eye out for these and if you see them coming the smartest thing to do is build some air units such as void rays or phoenix to handle the infestors from the air. If you follow this guide and learn the strenghts and weaknesses of your units then beating even a very good Zerg player can be a breeze. Good luck and I hope to see you on battlenet soon!

StarCraft 2 Tips: Getting Ready for The Zerging Rush!

July 9, 2010
By rbeach

The Zerg are more dangerous than ever this time around. Every time we start a game against a Zerg, the very first thing you need to be ready for is the zergling rush. This nasty speed upgraded zergling rush can wipe you out in the first moments of any battle. A good Zerg player can win the game by just using zerglings and banelings. This guide will show you how to be ready for and defeat this type of attack.

The great Zerg players on bnet right now have learned how to effectively use zerglings to harass us and run by our army to take out our suvs. This can be a devastating blow to our economy which will in turn cause us to fall behind in mineral gathering and cost us the game. One thing we can do of course is use supply depots to block off the entrance to our base but this will not stop a good Zerg player as they can use banelings to blow through the supply depots very quickly and run in with the speedlings.

The answer is to build hellions. Hellions are excellent at wiping out groups of zerglings and they move just as fast as the zerglings do so you will be able to keep up with them. Of course to make hellions so early in the game you will need to build a factory pretty quickly and start creating them out as soon as you know the Zerg player is using a lot of zerglings and banelings. If you use this method against a zergling attack you will have no problem taking out even an excellent Zerg player.
